About

It’s arrived! Following a whole load of research, and after two years in the writing, The Jehu Plan is finally here.
Faith and speed combine.

So what is The Jehu Plan?

On one hand The Jehu Plan is a chunky book that combines biblical wisdom with stories and quotations from many professional drivers and riders who have found great value in having a faith. The list includes, Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna, Darrell Waltrip, Davey Hamilton, Freddie Spencer, Emerson Fittipaldi and many more. While on the other hand the book is a personal devotional programme set over eight weeks that will positively change your life for good.

The Jehu Plan explains clearly the vital every-day attributes needed to thrive for those who want to be the best they can - because to truly be our very best we need to engage with who we are physically, mentally and spiritually.

So who is the plan for?

Written for anyone and everyone, whether they are a Christian believer or not, The Jehu Plan is not a heavy read and it has been written with as little technical jargon as possible. While you may be interested in faith and speed you don’t necessarily need to know lots about either…

The Jehu Plan has something for all, old or young, because we are all on a journey in a fast moving world.

Why Jehu. Why me?

Jehu was an ancient King of Israel (2 Kings 9-20). He was known for the ferocious style of his chariot driving. The Plan is named after him but intriguingly he brings much more to it than merely a title… King Jehu brings a model of style, attitude, commitment, purpose and calling, so powerful, that he positively wills us to live with decision and purpose, and not as passengers. Jehu wasn’t perfect, and we can learn from his mistakes too; but he was authentic. He knew who he was and what he wanted to achieve; and he lived the life of a king while serving the King of Kings.

The Jehu Plan inspires and challenges each of us to do the same - to be the best version of ourselves as we follow Jesus Christ, the ‘true and greater’ Jehu.

About

Alvin Davies: Author, Chaplain, Theologian, Racing Driver and Guitar Maker. Let’s meet the writer of The Jehu Plan whose own unique story laid the foundation for the project.

My story

I was born in the UK and grew up with a Christian faith and a passion for motorsport. From a young age I absorbed everything I could on go-karts, motocross and car racing, and as a teenager I rolled my sleeves up and got stuck-in, learning from my Dad, as we fixed and serviced his road cars.

At 16 I climbed onto my first Honda bike… and came off it when I attempted to shoulder-barge a wayward Mini out of my path (breaking by collar bone in the process!) At 17 I took to four wheels in my first car, an MG 1100, which I rolled and spun all at the same time just six weeks later. My path of automotive joy and pain was firmly set!

My faith too was solid and I remember being inspired by the stories of racers with faith – the former F1 driver Alex Ribeiro and the double 500cc motorcycle World Champion, Freddie Spencer were heroes of inspiration. I knew Jimmy Clark was one of the very best and nothing seemed cooler to me than the pictures I saw of Emerson Fittipaldi in his black and gold Lotus 72.

My love of racing meant that the public road was never going to be enough. So at the age of 20 I had my first test in a Formula Ford (at Elvington near York) and soon afterwards I graduated from the renowned Jim Russell Racing Driver’s School, Donington, where amazingly I won my first race. The following year I began a three season stint, racing cars in the UK Formula Vee championship.

Peaks and Troughs: it was a great time with some vivid memories – racing at Spa Francorchamps in a near monsoon being one of the best. Also, competing in a glorious V12 Ferrari 275GT in the Targa Florio Revival in Sicily was an awesome experience. But all good things come to an end, at least for a while. The following year I fell ill and was left with acute chronic fatigue – a rough time for sure. It was a time to lean of the faith and really know that, “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” – Romans 8:28.

Faith and Training

Fast forward eight years to 2008, with the health in better shape, I found myself getting itchy feet in regards to both my faith and my daily work as a professional luthier (guitar maker). As a result I closed the business and headed off to Oxford to study theology for four years, and then to Durham to complete a theology research degree/project specialising in preaching, teaching and interpretation of the Bible. These were special times of inner growth and learning for sure - for which I am so grateful. Sometimes when God isn’t so much working through us, he is working in us preparing us for what’s next.

During that time I sought out Alex Ribeiro to discuss the bold idea of re-establishing the Jesus Saves Racing team. The team had been so prevalent in the 1970s when winning races in Formula 2 and Formula Ford as it took the Jesus Saves logo message all the way to Formula 1, with Alex in the March team.

Somehow the original team were convinced that this was a worthwhile venture (a God thing). The initiative found success as in the first season back the team won the 2013 Classic Formula Ford championship with the super-quick Brazilian driver Adriano Medeiros. It was amazing and all done on a tight budget, and Adriano and the team repeated the same feat in both 2016 and 2017. The team continues, remaining true to the vision of being a competitive race team and a vibrant committed outreach ministry.

I was increasingly finding I had a great desire to share my faith and the Good News of Jesus with anyone who wanted to hear

Ministry, Jehu and Racing Today

Since those days I have worked in: UK Christian missions and evangelism, chaplaincy and church ministry and planting. I also still manage to take on the occasional guitar commission (the need for creativity still runs deep).

In 2017 I was also able to return to racing in an historic Cooper Formula Junior car that was specifically purchased by outside investors for use in motor-sports mission work.

It was great to be back in the cockpit… but even better to be sharing Good News.

Passion to see lives changed

The Jehu Plan comes from my unique journey and passion to see lives changed and renewed for the better. It’s about us having conversations about faith, spirituality and Jesus, and it offers a framework to do so. It’s a totally unique project where speed tells us something about faith, and where faith also informs us about speed and life. But mostly it’s about us all looking at who we are and who we can really be. For me that is Good News.

My passion is to see lives changed for the better by helping others explore what genuine faith looks like. The Jehu Plan has a lot of biblical wisdom in it. It also has a lot of stories, wise words and quotes from amazing racers that attribute their faith to being an intrinsic part of them. My only real contribution is to creatively mesh these two together in a new way that teaches classic truth to those who love faith or racing and anyone who identifies with being on a spiritual path in a fast world, or would like to.

God bless you as you read, race on
